That's all we have time for Good night and Good day.
Final score: The Hurt Locker: 6, Avatar 3 .I still haven't heard about my compatibility
Bigelow dedicates the award to the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Streissan literary has to support Bigelow as she is too weak in the knees walking off with Oscar.
The Hurt Locker wins!!!Tom Hanks doesn't waste any time. Opens the envelope and says The Hurt Locker Bigelow walks back for this . She is surprised. You can see it on her face as she stands speechless making Mark Boal making the speech. Boal pulls her to the mike she is fit. She can hold two Oscars and still talk. Steve Martin: The Avatar now takes place in the past.
Barbra Streissand is presenting the Best Director Award :
James Avatar Cameron, Quentin Basterd Tarantino, Kathryn Hurt Locker Bigelow, Jason Up in the Air Reitman and Lee Precious Daniels. Go go go Kathryn. And she does it. The ex husband has been beaten vanquished Kathryn breaks down on stage Words are hard to flow . She is the first woman to win the Best Director Award a moment of her lifetime. Thanks Mark Bull, screenplay writer, first up for doing a great job Yoo hoo Hurt Locker 4, Avatar 2. This is the big one
And the winner is... Sandra Bullock. The Academy treads the middle path by picking a middle-aged actress. Streep has set a new record. She has lost more times than any other actor. Sandra Bullock is a gracious winner. She talks directly to each Best Actor contender right at the beginning. Emotions take over as she thanks her mom, "My mom, who didn't let me drive with boys in the car till I was 18, cos I'd have done what she said I'd have done."Miss Bullock's realisation. And the Bullock Cart is full of love for Streep, her last words in the acceptance speech.
Meryl Streep in
Julie & Julia rounds up this category. Another outpouring of how-cool-you-ar
e Meryl introduction. Is there anything that hasn't been done as far as introducing Streep is concerned Sean Penn is pesenting the award. He is not an official member of the Academy. He wants to start afresh with the Academy.
We have two bald men and one semi-bald man introducing the nominees: Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side Oscar winner Helen Mirren has a spider web tattoo on her hand.
Her male co-stars find it really hot Carey Mulligan, with the short crop, is looking good Will she win? Going by her looks, yes! But she's too young the Oscar panel prefers older women. Gabourey Sidibe is introduced by Oprah WInfrey Sidibde missed school to audition for her role in Prescious Another young girl.
Now for the Actress in a Leading Role Award.
Just got an sms I want to share: Is it Love or just a compromise? Enter your Name and your partner's name to find out how compatible you really are. I have replied with My Name and Kate Winslet's . In the second message I keyed in Vera Farmiga.Let's wait for the answer .
He is a dude. He doesn't forget the people who keep him together. His team, trainer, agent, wife everyone. The wife is saved for the last, he's been with her for 33 years. With his looks Bridges could have been a playboy.
Jeff Bridges is the best actor Crazy Heart. He can't stop wooohhing It's refreshing, he says and a dedication to mom and dad a kiss, not to Kate, the Oscar. That's the only man he is kissing.
Colin Firth is talking about spooning a sharing a pillow with Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker). Firth throws in a "Good Luck, brother" Renner's gonna need it, Yoo hoo
Winslet is on screen. She is right. She doesn't have to do much by coming to present the award towards the end of the show a sight of her is enough.
Arghhh! The excitement is almost waking me up and not to mention the ravishing Vera Farmiga introducing George Clooney for the Best Actor in a leading role award.
Julianne Moore throws Colin Firth into the picture Tim Robbins brings in Morgan Freeman with a funny story of how he and Morgan got close Morgan Mandela Freeman tonight.
Actor in a leading role award is here finally! It's almost the last leg, It's almost bed time. Thanks, Soumita. Thanks Oscars
The Secret of her Eyes by Juan Jose Campanella. He minces no words about how difficult it is to make an acceptance speech in English.
Two poets are on stage. Quentin Tarantino and Piedro Almodavar. Tarantino's depiction of violence in his films and Almodavar's portrayal of women in his is pure poetry. They are presenting the Best Foreign Film Oscar. No Indian entry this year Lagaan was the last to make it in this category.
Argentina wins it. What? The Best Foreign Language Film Oscar
The Oscar Live coverage started at 6.30 and Faye and I have been at it for over 3 hours now. It's more than what anyone does covering a football match or a T-20 match. Either which way the T-20 coverage misses out on the best part -- the cheerleaders. No words can match the enjoyment of watching the cheerleaders perform in the flesh
Oh
The Hurt Locker has scored another one over Avatar. Hurt Locker wins the Film Editing Oscars . Yoo Hoo!
Here's my friend's very valid facebook status update: "What would you do if you were a joint Oscar-winner and your co-winner didn't let you say anything in the acceptance speech?!?"
Am waiting for the Best Actor presentation. Are we there yet? By the by, The Cove wins the Best Documentary (feature) Oscar. There it has happened, the co-winner didn't let the other co-winner speak at all and Louie Psihoyos had a paper with a speech which he never read out.
Matt Damon's presenting the award for Best Documentary (feature). Steve and Alec aren't getting enough stage time. They make it lively, bring them on. Let them bring down the house.
The scoreboard: Hurt Locker 3, Avatar 2
Michael Giacchino wins the Best Music (Original Score) for UP. He makes a valid point in his speech. Those of you who want to do something creative, get out there and do it. It's not
a waste of time. There's no Rahman here Best Visual Effects Award is coming up. This must be simple for everyone Avatar wins it. Star Trek and District 9 lose out Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum, Richard Banham and Andrew R Jones are the winners
And Avatar is in the fray, So is
The Hurt Locker .
Sherlock Holmes, Up and Fantastic Mr Fox (George Clooney) round off the category. Two animated movies in the running. Two box office masala movies
and the battle of the exes isn't Up in the winning zone.
Aside: Robert DeNiro was damn impressed with Benegal's Road, Movie do you think he is going to mention it if he comes on to the stage. They haven't shown jack Nicholson in the front row all day today. Maybe we haven't hit prime time yet . What I am waiting for: The Best Actor Award. Kate Winslet presenting it to George Clooney would be just terrific. And Jennifer beautiful back Lopez is speaking her co-presenter is speechless and is looking back. What could he be interested in? Of course the tribute to the Best Music nominees
It's a nicely choreographed tribute. Dancers in really simple clothes -- chinos and tees and sneakers. Nothing flashy Bollywood about this. No item girl either -- now that's a downside. The flips, turns, headstands, acrobatics and all are great, but they can't match a centrepiece item girl.
Ok Battle of the Exes update:
Hurt Locker 3;
Avatar 1, Looks like the
locker is really really big.
Back on stage, it's Demi Moore to introduce the James Taylor's tribute song to those Hollywood has lost.
Sandra Starry Shiny Bullock white with blood red lips is presenting the Outstanding Awards for ahcievements in cinematography.
Mauro Fiore wins it for Avatar. He thanks visionary James Cameron for his brilliant vision and breaks into Italian
. That's cue for he cameras to pan and zoom into Charlize Theron beautiful and calm and composed
.
Basterds! That World War II movie reminds me that due to a metal shortage during World War II, Oscars were made of painted plaster for three years. Following the war, the Academy invited recipients to redeem the plaster figures for gold-plated metal ones.
Another did you know moment: what sort of metal is brittania? Britannia metal is a pewter-like alloy. The statuette is then plated in copper, nickel silver, and finally, 24-karat gold.
This year's Oscar's special. I can use Basterds as many times as I want and I can't be pulled up for it. Thank you, Mr Tarantino. You are simply brilliant. Oh, and your movies are great too. I thoroughly enjoy them.
Avatar, Hurt Locker head to head again. Also in fray:
Up,
Star Trek and
Inglorious Basterds.
Paul N.J. Ottison wins the Oscar for best sound editing for Hurt Locker. Bigelow: 2; Cameron: 0. It's almost the same line-up for the Sound Mixing award,
The Hurt Locker again. Ottison's second award for the night.
Hurt Locker has won 3 awards now defeating
Avatar in two head to head. Everyone loves Katherine. Also she is better on the eye than her ex-husband. Cameron in black and white-how exciting! Katherine Bigelow in an off shoulder colourful gown - she wins hands down!
The horror over, Anna Up in the Air Kendrick is presenting the award for sound editing. Resul Pookutty is not there this time. Are we interested? Yes because Morgan Freeman is explaining the entire process of sound editing and mixing. One of my favourites The Dark Knight is his example.
Steve and Alec are "funny" funny and slapstick funny too. Twilight stars walk in. All the teeny boppers know their names clearly I will have to look up the names to stay with the "in crowd".
A musical special tribute to horror movies is coming up.
The next I see Gwyneth is on a glossy carrying Martin's kid in her belly. That was a cold blooded murder of my love life by the
Coldplay lead singer
The award is for those small designers, designers who refuse to do films about dead monarchs and musicals. This award is for you whose work hasn't been recognised, but I am taking it home tonight.
I remember Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love. She was this petite, young girl who I was beginning to like. Then came along Chris Martin and one song and he stole her away.
And I'm sleepy...
Desginer turned director Tom Ford and Sarah Jessica Parker are presenting the award for the Best Costume, Tom Ford sure understands design,he is Hollywood's favourite. Ask Mathew Broderick The Young Victoria costume designer Sandy Powell wins a third Oscar. She has won it for The Aviator and Shakespeare in Love. She is brilliant with her speech.
Now, that was a fun ceremony, She delivered just days after the ceremony when she won the best supporting actress award.
A standing ovation for the honorary Oscar winner Lauren Baccall. She has her sense of humour intact.
after that there is: Now, I will have a man on two legs in my room, she says
Robin Williams talks abut balls as he comes on to present the Best Supporting Actress role and then: I so want Vera...
Queen Latifah, Martin's co-star from
Bringing Down the House, comes on
.
Best Adapted Screenplay award goes to Geoffrey Fletcher for Precious. He is out of air. He can't breathe , he is hyper-ventilating in the mike and heaving it's emotional for him. Steve Marting claims credit for Fletcher's speech.
If there's a dark horse, I'd want Up in the Air to win. Reason: George Clooney. What more would you ask for? I say Vera Farmiga and there's an Indian connection to this. Sonia Bhalla, sounds Indian, is the second assistant director.
Hurt Locker 1; Avatar 0 , I haven't seen Hurt Locker, but I have seen Avatar . And if it's a toss up between these two, then my money is on Hurt Locker. Because what I saw wasn't that impressive. Enjoyable yes. Not stimulating entertainment: yes. life changing: no?
Kate Winslet is fab! That brief moment when the camera was on her, my heart beat much faster was I drooling?
No surpsrises, Dr Spock's team wins the prize for Best Make-up for Star Trek. Ever wondered why Dr Spock is ageless? He's got the best make-up team in Hollywood.
After all someone is not scared of Cameron. Ben Stiller is here as an Avatar, he even speaks the Avatar tongue he needs a partner Where is Sacha Baron Choen ? Where is Bruno?
Why is Stiller presenting the award for the Best Make-up?He should win for his get right now an Avatar, complete with a tail, in a black suit and a black tie and a black shirt . And Avatar is not even the running
Best Documentary short:
Music by Prudence wins the prize for Best Documentary short. The two makers are excited and cutting into each other's speech the woman wins! She gets to speak.Prudence is in the audience. A big applause for her and now the next award Best Live Action Short Oscar to
The New Tenants.
Frenchman Nicolas Schmerkin wins it for the 3000 sponsors of
Logorama (Best Animated Short Film)
Nominees for Best Animated Short:
The Lady and the Reaper
Granny O'Grimm
Logorama
A Matter of Loaf and Death
French Roast
Steve and Alec are sick of all the ugly actresses so they invite the beautiful Joey and Carey Mulligan. They are presenting the Oscar for the best short film.
I wonder what it was like in the old days when the Oscars were broadcast on the radio? How important was the Red Carpet?
Or was there a red carpet at all? Since 1953, the Oscars have been telecast on TV. In black & white for the first 20 years. Just like what all men at Oscars wear. It's like you can't win without black and white.
Samuel L Jackson is brilliant. His delivery, dialogue delivery, is unmistakable. He is on stage in all black
A wonderful revue tribute to John Hughes. Home Alone is on his CV. Mc Caulay Culkin, looking nothing like the sweet kid, remembers him.
Mathew Broderick is in Tom Ford. I don't see the difference between what he is wearing and what Clooney is? Both are wearing a tuxedo Black & white and a bow tie
They are presenting the awards for Best Writing (original screenplay). Mark Boal wins it for The Hurt Locker. He used to be a reporter who has covered the Iraq war. He dedicates the award to the troops and his father who passed away not too long ago.
Robert Downey Junior and Tina Fey are killing it-- they are taking the writers and actors apart. Fey wants computer generated actors - they will listen without the tantrums.
The Oscar statuette is not really worth its weight (8.5 lbs) in gold. Why? Because it is made of gold-plated britannium on a black metal base.
The first Oscar was given out in 1929. Emil Jannings, won it for Best Actor for his performances in The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh
The organising committe has been very strict this year. They had to to ensure they have enough time to introduce the long long list of 10 best movie contenders.
Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett win their first Academy Award for Crazy Heart. They keep it short and sweet. No sing song speeches.
Randy Newman of American Idol is in the running.
Last year there was Jai Ho! This year there's nothing that exciting. There's no Rahman.
That's the achievement in Steve's light.
And Steve and Alec are briefly and then hand over the stage to Amanda and Miley Cyrus. Best Original Song award is gonna be given out by them.
Up wins!
Director Pete wins with Up the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. He had lost five times in various categories before this.
What has Cameron done since The Mask that keeps her in our collective memory? She has maintained her oomph factor!
Cameron Diaz is here. She is presenting. Steve Carrel must stay in the background.
Did you know Sascha Baron Cohen was asked to step down from the presentation panel because he wanted to dress up as an Avatar. Organisers were afraid he might tick off Cameron. What sort of a man is he who cannot laugh at himself?
Everyone has done it to death, so will I---make this Oscar the Battle of the Exes.
Avatar or Hurt Locker? James Cameron or his ex-wife Katherine Bigelow?
My money is on Bigelow.
Waltz wins! He is a lucky man: He gets a kiss from Penelope Cruz....and then the Oscar.
Waltz ought to get it. He's got my vote
Viola! he's got the Oscar panel's vote too
Nominees: Matt Damon (Invictus)
Woody Harrelson (The Messenger)
Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds)
Christopher Plummer (The Last Station)

The Twilight stars are in spotlight

There they go. They had to bring in his ex wife Katherine Bigelow
Special 3D glasses to identify Avatar director James Cameron and a special effects spoof complete with soundtrack to spoof the movie
Everyone is in splits and applauding bang on cue.
Alec and Steve are funny
The joke's on her. And she seems to be enjoying it.
Streep is the pick of the night
Is it Dam Helen Mirren or Dame Helen Mirren? Steve's confused.
Vera Farmiga has caught Alec's attention.
Steve puts Meryl Streeps achievement in perspective: After 16 nominations, she has the maximum number of losses
Applause, Applause. Steve says everyone wants an Oscar but not everyone gets it.
Where are Alec and Steve?
Maybe they are in diguise
Oh here they are. coming down, lowered on to the stage in Victoria's Secret style
The best actor and actress nominees are on stage. Sandra Bullock's hair looks dark. Hair colour? Mirren is nice and silvery. Clooney and Freeman look like dudes. Off they go, and the awards are starting
6:57 The action is moving inside the Kodak Theater now. Streep has been nominated for Best Actress in Julie and Julia.
6:55: The Greatest Red Carpet in the world they say. What makes it great? 16 time Oscar nominee Meryl Streep. She loves this ceremony because this is the only time she gets to meet all her friends. They clean up and show up smart.
6:50: Kate winslet is presenting the best actor award. She won last year. She is stunning. She should win for simply showing up. Oh no! her interview is imterrupted by a huge roar. Must be George Clooney, she says.
6:47: Sarah Jessica Parker is in a Chanel. Recalling her first Oscar dress. She is going to return the dress tomorrow. She said it. There you go, they don't get to keep everything they wear.
6:46: Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart Best Actor nominee, and wife Susan in black. Bridges in Gucci and Susan in Monique.
6:45: Jennifer Lopez is gorgeous as ever. There she turns around, showing off her dress and beautiful back. She is still charming.
6.42: Best actor nominee Morgan Freeman has his daughter and Invictus producer for company. He is raising funds for the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
6:40 pm: Helen Mirren is wearing Chopard and some unpronounciable designer's gown. She is lovely and lively.
6.35: The best supporting actress nominees lined up at the carpet. Two are in red, two in blue. Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) is wearing nude colours and the shortest/smallest of the lot.
6.30: It's started. The most glamorous night of Hollywood. And it's raining. The tent is keeping the red carpet and its stars dry.
George Clooney in a tux is running around greeting fans. Really down to earth for Up in the Air best actor nominee. His carpet arm candy Elizabeth is in a red gown matching the red carpet.
Bullock, best actress, is waiting to eat a burger and down a shake as soon as the big night is done. She is starry starry in a silver dress.
